Romualdez flexes Lakas-CMD ‘unity’ ahead of 2025 midterm elections

(September 20, 2024) – House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Friday reiterated the full support of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) for Pres. Bongbong Marcos ahead of the 2025 midterm elections.

Romualdez stressed that his party will remain a reliable partner for Marcos, the head of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), to push for policies and reforms. Marcos and Romualdez are cousins.

“The strength of Lakas-CMD lies in our unity and our vision for a ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’” said Romualdez, the president of Lakas-CMD, in a media release. “Together, we will continue to be the driving force behind the reforms and initiatives to secure a better future for our country.”

Last May, Lakas-CMD and PFP formed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas for next year’s midterm elections.

Since then, the alliance has already signed agreements with other major parties, including the Nationalist People’s Coalition, National Unity Party, and Nacionalista Party.

Marcos claimed that his administration was only seeking political alliances to unite the country and not dominate the political landscape.

Marcos enjoys a supermajority in both chambers of Congress.

The development came at the heels of the steady decline of the erstwhile ruling party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) of former president Rodrigo Duterte. It has been losing lawmakers to Lakas-CMD since 2023.

Last month, Sen. Francis Tolentino resigned as vice president of PDP due to differences in preferred policies in the West Philippine Sea. Sen. Robin Padilla serves as the president.

Romualdez, meanwhile, reminded the 4,000-member Lakas-CMD to remember going beyond winning government posts.

“We are here to uplift every Filipino’s life, give voice to their concerns, and shape policies that will bring about lasting change,” said Romualdez.

Marcos and Romualdez, along with Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio, repeatedly proclaimed their vision of unity during the 2022 elections. The growing rift within the UniTeam, however, came to the front this year.
