(June 13, 2025) – Former presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque denied rumors that his asylum application in the Netherlands had been rejected, calling the reports “false information.”
Roque accused Joel Vega, a Philippine-born Dutch national, of spreading misleading claims regarding his immigration status.
“There is no truth that my Schengen visa is issued by Germany and that Dutch immigration authorities have forwarded my case to Germany,” said Roque in a statement on Facebook on Thursday.
Vega reportedly claimed Roque’s application was “terminated” on Tuesday and transferred to Germany under the Dublin Regulation, according to his so-called “reliable informant.”
The former human rights lawyer furthered that he got his national identification from the Netherlands on Wednesday.
“Asylum proceedings have not yet concluded, and no one has access to the proceedings except me and the Dutch government as the matter is treated with confidentiality,” added Roque.
Last March, Roque announced that he applied for asylum to gain protection amid looming arrest due to his alleged involvement in the Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO).

Roque also stressed he cannot return to the country yet to defend former president Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC). He, however, was not excluded from Duterte’s legal counsel, which British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman led.
Last month, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Boying Remulla said their agency was seeking to cancel Roque’s passport to ensure the latter’s deportation if his asylum application gets denied.

The decision of the DOJ came after a regional trial court in Angeles, Pampanga issued a warrant of arrest against Roque and 50 others due to qualified human trafficking related to the raided Lucky South 99 Corp. in June 2024.
