(January 3, 2025) – The Malacañang on Friday confirmed the decision of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to remove Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio and several past presidents as members of the National Security Council (NSC).
Last Monday, Marcos issued Executive Order (EO) No. 81 to reorganize the NSC to ensure that members could uphold national security and the sovereignty of the Philippines amid “evolving” challenges and opportunities.
Under the directive, Duterte-Carpio was stripped of her membership, including in the executive committee.
“At the moment, the VP is not considered relevant to the responsibilities of membership in the NSC,” said executive secretary Lucas Bersamin in a statement.
The NSC serves as the president’s advisory council for national security, including coordinating policies and supervising the intelligence committee.
In 2001, former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued EO 34, which automatically assigned the vice president to the NSC and its executive committee.
“When the need arises, the EO reserves to the president the power to add members or advisers,” added Bersamin.
Duterte-Carpio’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was also removed, along with Arroyo and fellow ex-chief executive Joseph Estrada.
“Previous orders reconstituted the NSC to further enhance the coordination between the executive and legislative branches, in the formulation and integration of policies affecting national security,” added the Malacañang.
Marcos and Duterte-Carpio have been feuding since their once-vaunted UniTeam was abolished.
Duterte-Carpio fired grave threats against Marcos, which the Malacañang deemed an issue of national security.
Meanwhile, Marcos has reiterated to enforce the country’s claims in the disputed territories in the West Philippine Sea against the persistent aggression of China.
Last August, Duterte-Carpio said she remained silent about the issue because she was not responsible for addressing territorial concerns. She was part of the NSC at that time.
Her father pivoted his foreign policy to China, calling it a “good friend” of the Philippines despite its constant bullying.
