(March 9, 2021) – Seismologists on Tuesday raised alert level 2 on the country’s most active Volcano, more than a year after it erupted, after observing increased seismic activity.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the Taal Volcano has been exhibiting increased unrest, like 28 volcanic tremor episodes, four low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and one hybrid earthquake at shallow depths of less than 1.5 km. beneath the Taal Volcano Island (TVI) in the past 24 hours.
“Overall, seismic activity in the past month indicates increased magmatic and hydrothermal activity at shallow depths beneath TVI,” said Phivolcs in its bulletin.
Philvocs said the alert level two means eruption may or may not happen.
It reminded the public to stay away from the Taal Volcano, declaring it a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). People were also forbidden to go to the volcanic island, including its main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure.
Last week, Phivolcs recorded 113 tremors in the Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.
“The total number of volcanic tremor events has risen to 866 since the onset of increased activity on February 13,” said Phivolcs. “In addition to these, a total of 141 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes have occurred within one kilometer depths beneath the volcano island and immediate vicinity.”
Phivolcs has been monitoring the Taal Volcano for possible eruption.
Local governments were told to continuously assess evacuation plans in barangays around Taal Lake.
Residents are also advised to be always prepared for evacuation and listen to information only from trusted or verified sources.
According to the Talisay, Batangas local government unit (LGU), an estimated 52,000 individuals will be evacuated in case of another eruption.
Earlier, Vice Governor Mark Leviste visited Phivolcs Batangas Station to draw up a plan for the province’s response in any eventuality.
Leviste reiterated that evacuation at this point will be unnecessary, but he reminded all Batangas citizens to be ready and vigilant.
