(September 22, 2024) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday warned its personnel against engaging in partisan politics in next year’s elections.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil stressed that police officers must protect the democratic process during the polling period to maintain peace and order instead of siding with any candidate.
“We will not tolerate any officer who compromises our commitment to neutrality and fairness,” said Marbil in a media release. “Any form of political interference, whether directly or indirectly, will be met with swift and decisive action.”
He reminded police officers to perform their duties based on the PNP’s four core functions: Intelligence, investigation, operations, and community relations, as the filing of certificate of candidacy approaches (COC).
“Every police officer must remember their oath to serve the people, not politicians,” stressed Marbil.
Filing of COCs for the midterm elections is from October 1 to 8. It will continue from November 4 to 9 for the inaugural Bangsamoro Parliament elections.
During the 2022 elections, the PNP reported 27 incidents of election-related violence, mostly in Mindanao.
Around 24 towns and four cities were placed under the control of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) due to security concerns.
The Comelec also investigated around 1,000 cases of vote-buying, which an international election watchdog deemed the “biggest flaw” in the country’s polls.
Marbil added that the PNP will collaborate with various government agencies to ensure public safety and the electoral process’ integrity.
“With the cooperation of the public and the dedication of our police force, we will succeed in ensuring that the 2025 elections are fair and peaceful,” said Marbil.
