(March 31, 2025) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said it will push for stricter penalties against irresponsible gun owners after a road rage incident in Antipolo, Rizal escalated into a fatal shooting despite the election gun ban.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil said he is planning to propose perpetual disqualification from gun license renewal and registration for those involved in firearm-related offenses on top of automatic revocation.
“Gun ownership is a privilege, not a right, and those who abuse this privilege by endangering others will face the full force of the law. Whether during the election period or not, we must all uphold responsible firearm ownership to prevent senseless violence,” said Marbil in a statement.
He also urged gun owners to practice patience and restraint, stressing anger must not dictate their actions when carrying a firearm.
“Sa isang iglap, maaaring magbago ang buhay dahil sa isang maling desisyon. Tandaan natin, huli lagi ang pagsisisi kapag may nasaktan o napatay dahil sa hindi tamang paggamit ng baril,” added Marbil.
On Sunday, Antipolo Police arrested a 28-year-old man after he opened fire at three riders during a road altercation. He also accidentally shot his wife.
One of the riders died at the hospital earlier today due to a gunshot wound in the head. The others are still recovering from their injuries, including the suspect’s wife.
The suspect, reportedly a businessman, claimed that he opened fire due to self-defense. The PNP, however, questioned why he had a gun with him despite the election gun ban, which took effect on January 12.
Over 2,000 violators have been apprehended, as of Sunday, according to the PNP.
In February, the PNP launched a 100-day security plan aimed at addressing private armed groups, among other potential threats, during the election period.
“The PNP urges all gun owners to comply with firearms regulations and exercise extreme caution in handling weapons, reminding the public that the misuse of firearms carries serious legal consequences,” said the PNP.
