(July 27, 2022) – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday said a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of Luzon, dealing damage to structures in some provinces.
Phivolcs downgraded the magnitude of the earthquake from 7.3 declared earlier today after its latest assessment, noting the epicenter near Tayum, Abra. It was also felt in Metro Manila.
Solidum explained that the segment that caused the quake was considered active even if there were no major tremors felt in the area recently. He also clarified that it was different from the segment that moved in the devastating 1990 Luzon Earthquake.
Arnel Garcia of Abra’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that some people sustained injuries due to fallen debris but they have yet to provide official numbers.
He also noted that they are having problems with communication following the earthquake. Despite this, he said that the provincial government has already dispatched teams who are assessing the extent of damages in different municipalities.
“Wala pa tayong accounting kung ilan, even sa damages,” said Garcia.
Initial reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed that some provinces in the Cordillera Administrative Region experienced landslides, including a portion of the Andres Acop Cosalan Road in Benguet and a portion of Halsema Highway near Mountain Province.
Netizens also shared videos of the earthquake which struck the famous Vigan Cathedral and the Bantay Bell Tower in Ilocos Sur. Some ancestral houses in Vigan were also damaged.
President Bongbong Marcos Jr. already assured the provision of support to the provinces affected by the earthquake.
For now, Solidum has advised the public to prepare for any possible aftershocks but clarified that a tsunami is not expected.
