TAAL UNREST | Phivolcs lowers Alert Level to 3, danger remains
January 26, 2020 , 02:12 PM

January 26, 2020 – The country’s volcanologists on Sunday lowered the Taal volcano alert level one notch to 3 after observing reduced activities indicating “decreased tendency towards hazardous explosive eruption.”

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or PHIVOLCS said the situation in the country’s second most active volcano “should not be interpreted that unrest has ceased or that the threat of a hazardous eruption has disappeared.”

Undersecretary Renato Solidum, Phivolcs head, said there were still fewer volcanic tremors, lesser sulphur dioxide emissions and satellite and GPS data showed decreasing activities and magma movements.

“If the downward trend continues, we may still lower the alert level 2,” he said, adding there is still a possibility of an increased activity.

He said the volcano will continue to emit steam due to heated water at the crater.

Authorities from the provincial government of Batangas gave thousands of displaced residents the “option” to return to home except in the towns of Agoncillo and Laurel, which are declared within the 7-km danger zone.

The residents in these towns are free to return home:

– Alitagtag
– Balete
– Cuenca
– Lemery
– Lipa City
– Malvar
– Mataas na Kahoy
– San Nicolas
– Sta. Teresita
– Taal
– Talisay
– Tanauan City

Areas still on lockdown:

– Agoncillo
– Laurel

On permanent lockdown:
– Volcano Island

Taal Volcano started its phreatomagmatic eruption on January 12 forcing families around the volcano areas to evacuate after their homes were covered with ash. (Juno Buena/MM)
