(July 1, 2021) – The Philippines began moving to a safe place away from a restive volcano thousands of families in a province south of the capital after a short magmatic explosion on Thursday afternoon, disaster response officials said.
Tadeo Sagritalo, regional operations chief of the Office of Civil Defense, said they have stepped up evacuation efforts in Agoncillo and Laurel town as sulfur emission from Taal volcano is hazardous to health.
More than 3,500 families, equivalent to less than 15,000 people, have fled from their homes in five villages, which are near the volcano island.
“There are no more people at volcano island, so those we’re evacuating are near the lake in Agoncillo and Laurel which were identified by Philvolcs (as high risk areas),” Sagritalo said.
“We are now just looking at the contingency measures, how many needed to be evacuated.”
Taal Volcano had a short magmatic eruption around 3 p.m., prompting officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to raise Alert Level 3 due to increased activities that could lead to an eruption. It erupted in January last year.
Ibinahagi ng PHIVOLCS ang naobserbahang dark phreatomagmatic plume sa 3:16 p.m. eruption ng Taal Volcano. Itinaas sa Alert Level 3 ang alert level sa bulkan.
“There were 2 smaller phreatomagmatic eruptions recorded from 6:26 PM and 7:21 PM that lasted 2 minutes and produced 200-meters high plumes,” dagdag ng ahensya.

Phivolcs warned of possible eruption in the next few hours because of magmatic intrusion in the volcano’s main crater.
More than 400,000 people in Batangas, Cavite, and Metro Manila, and as far as central Luzon were affected when Taal erupted.
Police chief General Guillermo Eleazar has also mobilized cops to help in the evacuation operations.
“We will make sure that no one approaches the said island,” Eleazar said. “It is better that we be alert and ready to ensure the safety of everyone.”
