(November 16, 2021) – Heber Bartolome, an icon of Filipino folk songs in the 1970s and 1980s has died after his blood pressure dropped, his brother said on Tuesday. He was 73 years old.

Jess Bartolome told radio station dzBB his brother was rushed to the Veteran’s Hospital after his blood pressure dropped but slipped away quietly on Monday night.

“Biglaan, nawalan ng pulso,” he told the radio interview. “Masaya pa kami nung birthday niya e.” Bartolome turned 73 years old on November 4.

He was known for his iconic songs “Tayo’y mga Pinoy”, “Nena”, “Almusal” and “Pasahero” Bartolome’s songs were about ordinary lives. He formed a band called “Banyuhay” with his brothers.

Bartolome was born in Nueva Ecija to Deogracias Bartolome, a violin and guitar maker and Angelina Gonzalez, a singer. Deogracias was also a rondalla leader. Heber was a member of the UP Concert Chorus. He finished a fine arts degree in UP Diliman in 1973 and taught Philippine literature at De La Salle University in the 1980s.

As a painter, Bartolome had made exhibitions and was also known as a lobbyist for the rights of Filipino musicians and composers.

As a songwriter, he became famous for his protest songs and a finalist at the 1978 Metro Manila Music Popular Festival for his song “Tayo’y mga Pinoy.” He was also the songwriter of the tune for Bulwagang Gantimpala’s Ibong Adarna in 1988.
