(May 30, 2025) — Former Negros Oriental lawmaker Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. said he is ready to face the criminal charges filed against him, following his deportation from Timor-Leste and return to Philippine custody on Thursday.
“We are prepared to face the charges,” said Teves’ lawyer, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, shortly after his client was brought to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) facility in Muntinlupa.
Teves, who had been staying abroad for nearly two years, was arrested by Timor-Leste authorities on Tuesday after rejecting his asylum request.
The former lawmaker is accused of masterminding the March 2023 assassination of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo and several other killings in the province. Despite maintaining his innocence, Teves had previously refused to return to the country, citing fears for his safety.
“Of course, I am sad because I will be jailed even if I haven’t been convicted,” Teves told reporters during a brief appearance. “But at the same time, I’m glad because I haven’t seen my mother for two years.*”
He added that he hoped the legal process would move swiftly to prove his innocence.
Teves was visibly emotional upon reuniting with his mother at the NBI headquarters. The agency confirmed that no special treatment would be accorded to him and that security protocols are in place while he is held in detention.
“We will treat him like any other detainee—no more, no less,” said NBI Director Jaime Santiago. “We are also taking steps to ensure his safety while under our custody.*”
Santiago also acknowledged the cooperation of the Timor-Leste government, considering the “seriousness of the cases filed against him.”
Officials of the NBI, Department of Justice , and Bureau of Immigration escorted Teves back to the country aboard a Philippine Air Force plane. After undergoing booking procedures, he was transferred to the NBI’s detention facility in Muntinlupa City.
Court proceedings are expected to follow soon after authorities return the outstanding arrest warrants. The schedule for Teves’ arraignment will be determined by the trial court.
