(AUGUST 20, 2019) – To prevent gender discrimination, Malacañang is proposing to mall owners to build separate restrooms for members of the LGBTQ community.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the idea was raised in a meeting between President Rodrigo Duterte and some representatives of the LGBTQ community on Monday night.
Panelo said a common restroom for males and females, like the ones at coffeeshops, is another option.
The Cabinet official said the proposals express the support of the president to the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression or SOGIE bill.
The bill prohibits any form of discrimination, stigma, violence and disqualification in job applications.
Panelo, however, was unsure if Duterte will certify the bill as urgent.
Transgender woman Gretchen Diez earlier urged lawmakers to hasten the passage of the bill after a mall janitress barred her from using the female restroom in a Cubao mall.
Apart from the additional restroom, a Commission for LGBTQ was also proposed under the SOGIE bill. (Kathryn Jose/JMF)
