(September 11, 2024) – Fresh off the world premiere of his debut film at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Filipino filmmaker Enrique Miguel Baniqued has been nominated for a prestigious honor for up-and-coming producers in Canada.
Baniqued is the lone Asian nominee for the Kevin Tierney Emerging Producer Award by the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) for his dramatic feature “Village Keeper.” The filmmaker shares the nomination with his co-producer and director Karen Chapman.
The Kevin Tierney Emerging Producer honor is part of the CMPA’s annual Indiescreen Awards.
The winner will be announced on September 12 during the Atlantic International Film Festival.
“Village Keeper”
Baniqued gave News5 a glimpse into his debut film, which revolves around a widow’s journey to find herself and address her trauma as violence grips her community.
“A big part of the movie is where the family talks about secrets and what secrets do and how keeping secrets within your family can affect…different generations,” said Baniqued.
“It’s one thing about culture in the Philippines, where hindi natin usually pinag-uusapan… usually we like to keep to ourselves and not really talk about things.”
“Village Keeper” depicts themes of gun violence, mental health, and generational trauma, something Baniqued believes has yet to be explored extensively in cinema.
“This film opened up a different side of filmmaking to me where it becomes more personal,” Baniqued said. “And I think that’s kind of what I would want to mix within my future projects: to have that entertainment value but also have a message that can affect people in a good way.”
Production challenge
Baniqued says Chapman had wanted to complete “Village Keeper” for nine years, and was only able to get the show on the road when they met in 2021.
They got to secure production funds through competitive grants from the Canadian government as well as organizations like the Canada Media Fund and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Chapman was also eight months pregnant during the production, compelling the team to shoot all scenes within 12 days.
Baniqued attributes the success of the production to his work ethic and the drive of his teammates, many of whom are immigrants like him.
“I think immigrants are very [success-]hungry people,” he said. “And I think it was a big part of having a good team that was able to get us to the finish line.”
Philippine premiere
Baniqued is eyeing “Village Keeper” to be shown in Philippine cinemas sometime next year.
“I haven’t been home for four years and I think that’s a perfect reason for me to go home: To play the film there and see my friends and catch up and have a party,” he said.
Before that, the feature is slated for premiere in various Canadian and international film festivals.
Baniqued and Chapman are also in talks with international distributors for a worldwide release of the film.
