(February 26, 2024) – After the Senate passed a bill to increase the minimum wage by P100, a leader at the House of Representatives on Sunday said they are looking at similar proposals but they want a higher amount.
Zamboanga 2nd District Rep. Mannix Dalipe, who serves as the majority leader, said some of his colleagues are suggesting to hike the minimum wage by P150 to P350.
“Our workers are enduring tough times, and as their representatives, it is imperative that we find substantial solutions to alleviate their financial burdens,” said Dalipe in a statement. “The urgency of these discussions highlights the House’s dedication to timely and impactful legislative action.”
Last Monday, the upper chamber approved Senate Bill (SB) No. 2534 on third and final reading, underscoring the need to alleviate the economic hardships that workers continue to face.
Workers from the private sector, regardless of their employment status, stand to benefit if the proposal passes into law, according to Section 3 of the bill.
“Nothing in this Act shall be construed to reduce any existing allowance and benefit of any form under existing laws, decrees, issuances, executive orders, and any contract or agreement between workers and employers,” read SB 2534.
But some members of the House of Representatives believe that the legislated increase must be higher.
Dalipe said the panel on labor and employment aims to prioritize the pending measures on wage increases, acting on the directive of House Speaker Martin Romualdez for them to “identify effective methods to enhance workers’ take-home pay.”
“We must ensure that our legislative actions truly make a meaningful difference in the lives of our workers, particularly when considering the substantial challenges faced by the business sector, especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises,” said Dalipe.
Sen. Chiz Escudero welcomed the lower chamber’s indication of its interest in pushing for the same cause.
“While we may disagree on a couple of things, there is so much more that we can agree on and work on together,” said Escudero. “Focusing on the things that bind us and working on matters that we agree on is the key to healing and unifying not only Congress, but our nation as well.”
The two chambers recently had a spat on the issue of charter charge, particularly on the alleged bribery in the efforts for a people’s initiative.
Escudero earlier asked the Department of Labor and Employment to support the P100 minimum wage hike, noting the agency’s mandate “to look after the welfare of workers.”
“Sana ay bigyan din ng panahon at pagkakataon ito ng Kamara upang mabigyang-buhay. Pagdebatehan kung kailangan, pagbotohan kung kinakailangan. Ang mahalaga, ito ay mapag-usapan at bigyan ng pag-asa na makapasa upang mabigyan ng pag-asa ang ating mga manggagawa,” urged Escudero.
