TRUCE VIOLATION | NPA rebels ambush police team in Iloilo, two wounded

DECEMBER 23, 2019 – Suspected Maoist-led guerrillas on Monday ambushed a police patrol on a central Panay island, slightly wounding two officers, the acting national police chief said in what could be a violation of a mutually agreed holiday ceasefire.

Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said a patrol team from the 1st Iloilo Mobile Force Company was waylaid in Barangay Singon, Tubungan town in Iloilo province at around 9:20 am, when a roadside crude bomb exploded as the patrol team pass by.

Luckily, the police officers were able to jump off from the vehicle, getting out from the “killing zone”, Gamboa told a news conference, saying two officers had slight injuries on their faces.

“This is probably the first atrocity that has happened despite the declaration of unilateral ceasefire on part of government,” Gamboa said.

The government and the communist rebel group had agreed to declare a simultaneous 16-day unilateral ceasefire during the Christmas season. It took effect on Monday, December 23 and will last until January 7 next year.

Gamboa said there is a high possibility that the communist rebels were behind the attack, citing the “massive operations” pursuing their local groups in the past days.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) eyes filing criminal complaints against the rebel group if confirmed.

For now, police will continue to comply with the unilateral ceasefire agreed by the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines.

“The PNP would always be alert but definitely we cannot go on the offensive because of our declaration,” he said. “Defensive mode pero we will still be actively monitoring them.”
