(April 11, 2022) – At least 25 people were feared dead and 45 others remained unaccounted for as a tropical depression brought heavy rains and loosened soil causing a mudslide in a central province, local disaster and government officials said on Monday.
Baybay City residents were asleep when landslides hit a mountainside village, said Leyte Congressman Carl Cari. Torrential rains that have inundated the province since last week was aggravated by the onslaught of Agaton, the first cyclone to hit the country this year.
“Akala namin kahapon ng gabi, akala namin hihina na yung ulan pero lumakas,” Cari said in a phoner with News5. “Tapos kaninang umaga, ‘yun na nga, may mga bundok na bumigay may mga natabunan na barangay, no. Kawawa eh.”
Packing center winds of 45 kph and gusts of up to 60 kph, Agaton, which has since weakened from a tropical storm early this morning, is now slowly moving northwards over Basey, Samar, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 8 p.m. bulletin.
Baybay City police chief, Lieutenant Colonel Joemen Collado, said at least 23 died in the city, with 16 found in Barangay Mailhi, citing information from the police and local disaster risk reduction and management office. Three more were in Barangay Kantagnos, two in Barangay Maypatag and one in Barangay Bunga.
At least 50 people have been rescued and are now receiving medical attention, Cari said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also said two more fatalities in Monkayo, Davao de Oro and one in Cateel, Davao Oriental, all currently undergoing validation as of 3 p.m. Three additional deaths in Negros Oriental are also being verified, said its spokesman Mark Timbal.
PAGASA has hoisted Signal No. 1 over the southern portion of Masbate, Eastern Samar, Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, the northeastern portion of Cebu including Camotes Island Dinagat Islands and Bucas Grande Islands.
The cyclone is expected to remain a tropical depression while slowly looping around the northeastern portion of Leyte and the southern parts of Samar and Eastern Samar before emerging over the Philippine Sea northeast of the country by tomorrow evening.
The NDRRMC reported 224 flooded areas in Western aand Easter Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, CARAGA, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Some 25 other incidents such as landslides were also reported.
Over 136,000 individuals or nearly 87,000 families have been affected by the storm, with more than 25,000 displaced, the agency said. The hashtag #LeyteNeedsHelp trended on Twitter as netizens pleaded for assistance for the storm-hit families in the province.
President Rodrigo Duterte’s acting spokesman Martin Andanar assured that authorities are “closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Agaton as the government’s hands are on deck to assist affected residents.”
“Muli kaming nananawagan sa publiko, lalo na sa mga lugar na naapektuhan ng bagyo, na magsagawa ng kinakailangan precautionary measures,” Andanar said in a statement.
