(MAY 16, 2019) – Senate President Vicente Sotto III is not a fan of how San Miguel Beermen clinched a historic five-peat championship in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The MVP June Mar Fajardo-led SMB defeated sister team Magnolia Hotshots 72-71 at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, extending their dynasty as all-Filipino champions to five seasons.
But Sotto, an apparent Hotshots fan, was upset about the calls of referees in the final minute of the game as SMB sealed its comeback.
“5 vs 8. Ugly!” he wrote on Twitter, insinuating a bias for the Beermen on part of the three referees.

The senator’s niece Danica Sotto is married to Magnolia’s former talisman Marc Pingris who was out of the court due to an injury.
Sotto also belongs to the Nationalist People’s Coalition which was founded by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) chairman Danding Cojuangco.
The SMC group is the mother company of both San Miguel Beer and Magnolia.
Meanwhile, reelectionist Sen. Sonny Angara, who is doing well in the partial official and unofficial counts, took some time off to watch Game 7 live. He also congratulated the Beermen for winning the title.
Angara, who is also an official of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas, praised former Gilas guard Alex Cabagnot for his clutch performance in the title-clincher.
