UNDERSTAFFED IN GOV’T HOSPITALS | DOLE to slow down deployment of nurses abroad
June 12, 2019 , 02:39 PM

JUNE 12, 2019 — Labor Department Secretary Silvestre Bello III is now studying the possibility of limiting or slowing down the deployment of nurses abroad to avoid shortage in government hospitals in the country.

“All the while akala ko may oversupply tayo ‘yun pala, ‘yung mga nurses na nagbo-board, nagta-training sila ng two years dito and then they leave,” Bello said at the sidelines of the Independence Day job fair in San Andres, Manila.

Bello said the move still requires legislation. They will also recommend to increase the salary of nurses.

“‘Yan ang instruction ng presidente, bigyan ng increase hindi lang ang nurses, hindi lang teachers kundi lahat ng nasa gobyerno,” Bello said.

Bello also called on hospitals to stop abusing nurses in order to encourage them to stay.

“‘Wag niyo naman pagsamantalahan ang ating mga nurse dahil ang ginagawa ninyo,’yung nurse na board passer na gusto magtrabaho para magkaroon ng enough experience para makapunta abroad, sila pa ang pinagbabayad ninyo ng training fees instead of giving them rightful salaries,” he said.

The Labor department’s possible move to slow down deployment may not sit well with nurses looking for job abroad where pay is more than double or triple of what they earn in the Philippines.

According to DOLE, an entry level registered nurse receives a salary of P8,000 – P13,500 per month.

In the government, the average salary per month is around P13,500 while in the private sector, the rate average is around P10,000 per month.

Overseas, the pay scale is way above local rates with the US market offering an average salary of $3,800 per month, the United Kingdom with £1,662, and Canada with $4,097 for entry level.
