(June 20, 2024) – Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque described Vice Pres. Sara Duterte as the new face of the opposition following her resignation as a Cabinet member, Secretary of the Department of Education, and Vice Chairperson of NTF-ELCAC on Wednesday. Roque said it’s proof that the UniTeam no longer exists.
Vice Pres. Duterte stated she had spoken personally with Pres. Marcos about her resignation, which he accepted. She did not disclose specific reasons but emphasized her commitment to the country’s educators and youth.
“Ang aking pagbibitiw ay hindi lulan ng kahinaan kundi dala ng tunay na malasakit para sa ating mga guro at kabataang Pilipino,” Duterte said.
However, according to Roque, there are already longstanding issues within UniTeam.
For former presidential spokesperson Atty. Salvador Panelo, the vice president was disheartened not only because Pres. Bongbong Marcos did not defend her on the issue of confidential funds but also because of the attacks from several congressmen, including House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Meanwhile, the Senate was not surprised by VP Duterte’s resignation. According to Senate Pres. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, the Vice President’s resignation became inevitable after her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, started attacking Pres. Marcos, Jr. and the First Family.
Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said he believes that VP Duterte carefully considered her decision and that whatever her next plans are, he will support her.
Sen. Imee Marcos also expressed her support for VP Duterte saying, “Ako ay iyong kasama sa bawat hakbang, bawat araw at bawat laban, dahil iisa lamang ang nais natin; magwagi at magtagumpay ang mahal nating Pilipinas.”
Former president Rodrigo Duterte has not yet made a statement. However, according to former Presidential Political Affairs adviser Ronald Llamas, VP Sara’s resignation indicates the Duterte family’s plans for the upcoming election.
Meanwhile, according to UP Professor Antonio Contreras, it only proves that the UniTeam was merely a strategy during the last election.
