WIDER TESTING | Philippines plans to test one million people by August as infections reach 21,000 mark

June 06, 2020 – The Philippines aims to test a million people for coronavirus by August, as the health department expand its screening to people who have do not have symptoms, an administration official said on Saturday.

Retired general Carlito Galvez Jr., chief implementor of the government’s pandemic response, said the testing capacity will be increased as more laboratories will be opened outside the capital region.

“We are planning to test one or 2 percent of the population, one million people by August,” Galvez said in the Laging Handa virtual briefing on Saturday.

The government planning to reach a testing capacity of 50,000 a day this month, as the number of accredited laboratories rose to 52. However, the actual tests per day is only a little over 10,000 as many machines were broken and some laboratories were not operating 100 percent.

Health officials said a total of 357,252 individuals had been tested since March.

On Saturday, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Philippines has reached 21,340, after the health department reported an additional 714 new infections.

Figures from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that the number of new cases were almost thrice of those recorded on Friday. Fresh cases, or those whose test results came within three days, doubled from 168 yesterday to 350 today. Majority of the patients came from Metro Manila and Central Visayas.

While the number of late cases also jumped from 76 on Friday to 364 on Saturday. Health Undersecretary Maria Vergeire had said the backlog came from one remaining laboratory.

On the other hand, 111 new recoveries have been recorded, with the total now at 4,441. Seven more have died, with the total death toll just six cases shy of the 1,000 mark.

Despite the continuous rise in cases, the DOH is confident in managing the virus, citing that the Philippines’ 7.2 percent positivity rate is well within the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for sufficient testing.

Earlier, the DOH laid out plans to test asymptomatic carriers, or those who do not manifest symptoms of the virus, in the government’s expanded targeted testing plan. This includes those who have come in close contact with a positive case, and those who are at high-risk of contracting the disease. (Reports from Greg Gregorio | Katrina Elaine Alba/MM)
