JUNE 13, 2019 — President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated on Wednesday that the government is now working on his promised salary increase for public school teachers.
Duterte made the remark as the sector revived its call for a pay hike, following the significant increase in the salaries of police offices, soldiers, and other uniformed personnel in 2018.
The chief executive claimed the latter’s pay hike was prioritized over that of the teachers as they were fewer in number.
“We’re working on it, akong saad, pero timan-i baya na there are millions of teachers,” Duterte said in his speech before newly elected officials of Cagayan de Oro City.
(We’re working on it, my promise. But remember that there are millions of teachers.)
He also highlighted the risks faced by police officers and soldiers in the line of their duty.
“They have taken an oath of office, joined an organization inside the government that… If I tell them to go to Malabang in Lanao del Sur because there’s war, ‘Jump straight to hell and die,’ they will do that. Go there and fight until you die,” he said.
