(September 03, 2020) – A Grab food courier went viral on social media after he was photographed taking a break from delivering food in order to attend online classes.
Ax Valerio, a 21-year old, was working as a food courier for Grab when he made a brief stop in a parking lot at a Parañaque shopping mall to attend to his online classes, using his mobile phone in the middle of the pandemic.
“Kasi bonus points pag umattend ng klase,” Valerio told News5, adding his work as a Grab food delivery helps keep him in school at Adamson University in Manila.
A communication arts student, Valerio has been working for more than a year as a rider to help his family while still continuing his classes.
Valerio said he had to find ways to support his schooling by himself, since his mother could not work anymore while his father had a stroke.
While snaking his way around the city to deliver food, he tries to squeeze in his classes five times a week.
“Para sa akin hindi hadlang para itigil ang pag-aaral. Hangga’t may pagkakataon para mag-aral gagawin ko,” he said.
Valerio’s dream is to be a filmmaker. He started as a theater actor in his barangay, and eventually grew to love short films.
“Kaya yun yung kinuha kong course, gusto kong maging direktor at makapagpasaya ng tao,” he said.
Valerio’s photo immediately went viral. The rider shared that many people contacted him, offering to provide support.
“Hindi ko akalain na may ganung mag-aabot ng tulong. Gusto ko lang iabot storya ko sa ibang kabataan na nagsisikap din,” he told News5.
The education department reported an estimated four million students would be considered out of school youth this year, as parents have lost jobs and livelihood due to the lockdown. Some were forced to transfer to public schools to cope with additional requirements for online learning.
But Valerio said working students should not lose hope.
“Yung mga nawalan ng pag-asa mag-aral, kaya natin to kahit na ganito ang panahon. Wag tayo susuko,” he said.
