DECEMBER 2, 2019 — Filipino Olympian Hidilyn Diaz runs away with another gold to add to the Philippines’ medal haul.
Diaz took home on Monday her first Southeast Asian Games gold medal after dominating the women’s weightlifting 55kg division, bringing the country’s total gold tally to 36.
“Ako po’y nagpapasalamat sa inyong lahat… Malaking bagay po para sa’kin na nandito kayo [para] suportahan ako. Also, nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng Pilipino na sinusuportahan lahat ng Filipino athletes,” said Diaz in an interview after her victory.
The Filipina weightlifter managed to lift 91kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 211.
Her SEA Games gold is the latest addition to her medal collection, which includes a silver from the 2016 Summer Olympics as well as gold from the 2018 Asian Games.
Diaz also took home two bronze medals from the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand.
Diaz hoped to boost her Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifying bid with her latest victory.
“[For the Tokyo] 2020 Olympics, kailangan ko pa po maglaro ng two additional competitions… Please continue your prayers na sana hindi ako mag-give up,” said Diaz.
The national team for weightlifting has also delivered other medals for the country.
Mary Flor Diaz, Hidilyn’s cousin, delivered a bronze finish last Sunday in the women’s 45kg class while John Fabliar Ceniza nabbed a silver in the men’s 55kg division.
