(May 29, 2024) – Sheena Palad, the “upcoming younger singer” who replaced veteran actress Eva Darren as a presenter during the Filipino Academy of Movies Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards night on May 26, breaks her silence after being “harassed, maligned, called names” online.
“Pinuntahan po ako ng staff. Sabi niya, ‘Sheena, can we ask a big favor from you?’ Sabi ko ‘yes, what’s that?’ ‘Can you present the awards?’ Sabi ko, ‘Okay, sige. sige. No problem.’ That’s it. ‘Yun lang po ‘yung alam ko. Hindi ko po alam na si Ms. Eva ‘yung magpe-present,” the younger singer explained on a Facebook video she posted on Monday.
“Sabi niya [staff], ‘Once you are done with the production, punta ka nasa gilid and Sir Tirso will be with you.’ ‘Yun lang. I was just following instructions,” she added.
Palad explained she was merely following instructions from the event staff and was unaware of the original arrangement.
“Actually noong time na ‘yon, I was clueless. Hindi po kasi ako nanonood noong awards night because I was in the holding area. So, hindi ko po alam kung paano mag-present. I wasn’t prepared. Hindi ko man lang nabasa ‘yung script. As in wala, wala po talaga,” Sheena further stated.
Meanwhile, her boyfriend host-singer Johann Enriquez requested to put an end to bashing, hates and public criticism towards her girlfriend emphasizing that she was just following instructions and doing her job.
“Sheena is very much in pain right now because of all the bashings and all the hate that you were throwing at her. Ako po, bilang isa sa mga nagmamahal kay Sheena, nakikiusap po ako na kung pwede po, itigil niyo na ‘yung pangju-jugde…dahil wala po talaga siyang kinalaman doon sa pangyayari. She’s totally innocent,” he said.
FAMAS already issued an apology explaining that their production team failed to “locate” Darren considering that they were running a live show and hundreds of people in the venue.
Fernando de la Peña, son of the veteran actress who called out the award-giving body, accepted the apology together with his family.
But he emphasized in a statement on Tuesday, ”My mom was seated in a table front and center adjacent to the stage, rubbing elbows with my second mom, Ninang Divina Valencia and my awesome Tita Marissa Delgado.”
“Ms. Eva Darren, our family accepts the olive branch that FAMAS has extended and only hope that future events would prove to be contrasting,” he added, as he recommended two things for the next FAMAS awards — “stick to the script” and “maybe [give] a nice pair of eyeglasses for all in charge.”
