(January 9, 2024) – Despite wider disapproval of the government’s efforts to arrest high inflation, an independent pollster said on Monday night that many Filipinos might still have been willing to give President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. more time to address the problem.
Filipinos appear to have been “lenient” with their assessment of the Marcos administration, even if a “significant majority” of them already disapproved of his government’s policies on inflation, said Ronald Holmes, president of Pulse Asia Research.
“Maybe there’s a separation between holding the administration accountable, and they’re willing to give some more time for the individuals or the personalities to address this problem,” Holmes said on CignalTV’s One News channel’s program “The Big Story.”
“If they see that these people are not in any way involved in issues of personal integrity, they’re willing to provide higher trust ratings. Or they see that they’re doing their jobs or might be performing in a way that they express that they’re doing their jobs, then that’s how lenient or liberal the assessment might be of several Filipinos.”
Pulse Asia’s December 2023 opinion poll found that 68% of Filipinos nationwide approved of Marcos’ performance, an “essentially unchanged” 3-point increase from the previous quarter.
His trust ratings climbed by 2 points to 73% over the same period.
But disapproval of his administration’s approach to inflation rose to 73%, a 17-point jump from last September. The approval of his government’s measures on inflation also went down by 7 points to 9%, while ambivalence stood at 18%.
Holmes noted that this is the first time a “significant majority” of the Filipino public disapproved of the government’s performance in addressing inflation.
“It shows that people are still concerned about high prices, even though you had headline and core inflation essentially declining in the past quarter. The prices remain high and the people are not satisfied, are not approving of the initiatives or steps taken by the administration to address this problem,” he said.
Inflation slowed for the third consecutive month to 3.9% in December last year, based on figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
For the full-year average, inflation reached 6%, well above the government’s 2% to 4% targets.
