(NOVEMBER 10, 2021) – In the middle of July 2021, amid a global pandemic, a confirmation of victory in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was actually a sign of hope for our nation. The first Olympic gold medal (of the Philippines) was taken home by weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and the Filipino people finally had something to celebrate about.

Hidilyn Diaz didn’t only lift the barbell, but she also lifted the spirit of her country and its people—a historic feat that brought many to tears.

Early October, Jollibee introduced the newest member of the Jollibee family. “I am very honored to personally welcome our country’s first Olympic gold medalist and our newest ka-Jollibee Hidilyn Diaz. Masayang masaya kami na parte ka na ng pamilya namin.

I can still remember the elation and the goosebumps I felt when I watched you make the final lift and stand on the podium while the National Anthem was being played. It was such a moment of joy and triumph for the entire Philippine nation,” Jollibee Philippines president Ferns Yu, Jr. said in the press conference held last October 14.

Hidilyn’s Kwentong Jollibee feature titled ‘GINTO’ was actually the fast-food chain’s gesture of saying thank you to her in the best way that they know how. “Please allow me to thank you once again on behalf of the Jollibee Foods Corporation for being a great source of pride and joy for the whole nation. You made all of us, Filipinos, believe that hard work, grit, and passion can really do pay off. Lakas at Puso talaga,” Yu added.

“GINTO: A Hidilyn Diaz Kwentong Jollibee Special” directed by Pepe Diokno was released last October 15. In the short video, Hidilyn’s success was not the only thing highlighted—how she overcame adversity and challenges were also unfolded. It was a reminder that her triumph was no easy feat, but she did everything she possibly could to reach for her dream.

Award-winning director Pepe Diokno is no stranger to the popular Jollibee short films, but he says that this one was something different. He said he couldn’t believe that he was given the honor to direct this particular special.

“All the Kwentong Jollibee films that we did were inspired by the real stories of everyday people, but this is the first time ever that we’re doing a [feature] about someone who is so well-known and that everybody has seen throughout the years. We all just wanted to give justice to Hidilyn’s story and beyond that, just try to capture the inspiration that she gave all of us,” he explained.

“We have done a lot of Kwentong Jollibees for the past 6 years now but this one is very special and truly one of a kind. It is based on the inspiring true story of strength, heart, and faith of Hidilyn Diaz whose historic feat in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gave joy to every Filipino and lifted our nation. Ang sabi nga binuhat ni Hidilyn and buong Pilipinas sa pagkapanalo niya ng ating kauna-unahang ginto sa Olympics,” JFC Philippines Country/Regional Marketing Head and Jollibee Philippines Marketing Head Francis Flores mentioned.

After watching her special for the first time, Hidilyn couldn’t help but cry because of happiness and fulfillment. She hopes to inspire and bring joy to the Filipino people when they watch her Kwentong Jollibee. “Sobrang excited po ako dahil fan po talaga ako ng Jollibee mula noon and I’m very happy to be part of a brand na proudly Pinoy,” Hidilyn said in the exclusive media premiere.

She also mentioned that she was very happy when Jollibee approached her for this feature since the restaurant has been her favorite since she was a kid. In one of her outreach activities in her hometown Zamboanga, she served Jollibee products even before being an endorser of the brand.

The Jollibee family even supported and visited her when she opened a gym in her hometown in 2017, which only proves how solid their relationship was from the very start.

Her favorite part in the special was being able to go back to her humble beginnings while seeing the genuine reaction of the Filipino people to her victory. She didn’t realize until then how inspiring her story was, and how much of an impact her gold medal made.

At the end of the day, all she wanted was to bring honor to her country and to inspire people, especially the youth and her co-athletes, to never give up on their goals. Despite being away from home and falling down a couple of times, she was able to stand up stronger than ever.

Hidilyn ended with, “Ang tagumpay ko ay hindi lang sa akin, pero para sa bawat Pilipino.”

As a way of giving back, Hidilyn Diaz together with her Jollibee family launched the “Champ & Joy Super Meal” that aims to help her fellow Filipino athletes reach for their dreams. For every meal sold, a portion will be donated to the Philippine Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission. The super meal includes a Champ burger, 1-piece Chickenjoy with rice, a Free Go Large Coke, and comes with a special paper packaging and collectible card featuring Hidilyn herself. The meal is available in select Jollibee stores nationwide until November 30 only.
