(October 5, 2024) – Progressive groups on Saturday urged Filipinos to amplify the calls for Israel to stop its attacks against Palestinians as the intensifying conflict nears its one-year anniversary.
Child rights group Salinlahi Alliance for Children’s Concerns stressed that the United Nations (UN) has yet to convict Israel for violating the human rights of Palestinians. It also slammed the United States (US) for allegedly sponsoring Israel’s military offensive.
Salinlahi furthered that the Philippines must oppose Israel’s “genocide,” which has led to the death of over 40,000 Palestinians, including around 11,300 children, according to the health ministry of Gaza.
“Tinatanggalan ng mga Israeli at ng US ng karapatan ang mga batang Palestino kagaya kung paano din nila niyuyurak ang mga karapatan ng mga kapatid nating katutubo dito sa bansa natin,” said Salinlahi spokesperson Miguel Gonzales in a statement.
The worsening conflict began after Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel last October 7 due to the latter’s continued invasion of Palestine’s territories.
In response, Israel has launched continuous attacks, causing mass destruction and a humanitarian crisis due to loss of livelihoods and homes and famine.
“We are witnessing not just the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people from their land, but an actual genocide in real time, as the Israeli occupation forces completely cut off Palestinians’ access to clean drinking water, proper food and nutrition, health services, safe shelter, and education,” added Gonzales.
Youth group Student Christian Movement of the Philippines (SCMP), meanwhile, called for a ceasefire in Gaza and urged Filipinos to recognize the plight of Palestine.
“Every effort must be exerted in order to be in solidarity and to achieve genuine liberation. We challenge every Filipino, inheriting the anti-colonial struggle of our Katipunan forefathers, to faithfully stand with Palestine against genocide, ethnic cleansing, and imperialism,” said SCMP national chairperson Kej Andres.
Israel has denied “genocide” allegations, claiming it only acted in self-defense against Hamas.
A UN Human Rights Council report, however, found “reasonable grounds” proving Israel’s atrocities.
