(November 4, 2021) – Vice President Leni Robredo will primarily focus on boosting the health sector to help facilitate the country’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, unveiling an eight-point plan she will implement if she gets elected as president in the 2022 elections.
Robredo, running as an independent candidate, emphasized the need for a “strategic” response to the health crisis to ease people’s fears and suffering.
Robredo vowed to make healthcare free and accessible by properly implementing the Universal Healthcare Law passed in 2019, enrolling all Filipinos under the system within three months. She also wants to fix the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to efficiently deliver services to the people.
Healthcare workers can also expect more benefits to adequately compensate them, said Robredo. She added that hospitals must also have a higher bed capacity and additional infrastructure to accommodate more people.
Robredo also took a swipe at the corruption and anomalies hounding the Department of Health and other related agencies in charge of the country’s COVID-19 response.
Under her term, Robredo promised there won’t be any widespread lockdowns to limit the adverse impacts on the economy. Only targeted lockdowns, coupled with financial aid, mass testing, and contact tracing, will be implemented, she added, reiterating her suggestions to the administration since last year.
Robredo also vowed to give ample support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that struggled to cope during the COVID-19 crisis, pushing for a stimulus package worth at least P100 billion.
Last year, more than 70% of MSMEs were forced to temporarily close, according to the Asian Development Bank.
She also reiterated her repeated calls to reopen classrooms in areas with low COVID-19 cases.
Robredo has received praises for her initiatives like the Bayanihan E-Konsulta, Swab Cab, and Vaccine Express despite her limited resources. Her office mostly relied on volunteers for projects during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Still, the Malacañang has rebuked Robredo, rejecting her suggestions as a form of “politicking.” She, however, has stayed unfazed amid the endless attacks.
Para tayo’y makahinga muli,” said Robredo.
