(October 15, 2021) – A 14-year-old boy died on Thursday after being shot using a pen gun in a violent riot between two groups in Tondo, Manila.
The victim was taken to the hospital but he was proclaimed dead due to the injuries he sustained. His mother lamented the untimely demise of the young boy.
“Nag-aaral ‘yun dati kaso tumigil lang. Basta (nangako siyang) tatapusin ‘yung pag-aaral,” the mother said in an interview with News 5.
CCTV footages taken along Abad Santos Avenue showed at least 15 men, allegedly all teenagers, figured in a riot around 4 a.m. on Thursday. The clashing factions were seen throwing rocks and other items at each other, while some even carried blocks of wood to attack the rival group.
It escalated when one of them fired a pen gun during the rumble, hitting the victim and prompting the opposing group to flee the scene. The teen was also beaten by another man using a block of wood after being shot.

The Manila Police District arrested John Kaede Romero who allegedly shot the victim. Romero denied the accusations, saying he was only there to watch the riot. Police officers were unable to retrieve any pen gun from him.
Romero admitted to joining similar clashes in the past but said he already stopped doing so. He said the groups also have online chatrooms where they inform each other when and where the riot would take place.
“Dati, (nung) wala pa akong anak, nakikipag-riot na kami roon. Basagulero talaga ako sa lugar na ‘yon,” said Romero. “Pumuputok ako roon dati nung wala pa akong anak. Marami na akong tinatamaan doon.”
Officials from Brgy. 252, which covers the area where the riot happened, said the groups typically fight when there’s no barangay tanod around.
“Tiyempo na mga walang iikot—patay na oras na,” according to barangay councilors Leana Angat and Maje Salenga. “Hindi naman siya lagi. So, parang ‘pag napag-isipan lang ng mga kabataan na dumayo diyan. Actually, ‘yan sila, mga dayo lang. Hindi naman talaga sila residente dito.”
Local authorities have also relieved the Bambang outpost chief following the incident, promising to step up their efforts to prevent any similar incidents from happening.
Just three weeks ago, an 18-year-old girl attending a funeral was also killed after being shot by a pen gun during a riot in Tondo. One teenage boy was injured. Four were arrested in the incident, all of them minors.
