(December 21, 2020) – Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Debold Sinas said on Monday that the murder of a mother and her son in Paniqui, Tarlac by an off-duty police officer doesn’t reflect the mandate of the PNP.
He also offered his condolences to the family of the victims, Sonya and Frank Gregorio, who were brutally shot by Police Senior Master Sgt. Jonel Nuezca on Sunday afternoon over a tension-filled argument.
“The PNP considers this as an isolated involvement of the person of P/S Sgt. (Jonel) Nuezca. In no way will such incident affect the sworn duty of the 221,000 police personnel to serve and protect our people,” said Sinas in a press conference.
Sinas bared that the 46-year-old Nuezca already has five previous criminal and administrative cases since 2010, including two homicide charges, which got dismissed due to lack of evidence.
“All of them were dismissed except for a case in 2016 for a less grave offense when he was suspended for 31 days,” said Sinas in a press conference.
Nuezca shot the victims in close range before allegedly nonchalantly fleeing the scene with his wife and their 13-year-old daughter.
Sinas said Nuezca is now under police custody and was already issued with an automatic leave of absence that would cut him from receiving his monthly salary and allowances. He added that Nuezca will be fired.
“I have further directed the (PNP) IAS (Internal Affairs Service) to ensure the quick resolution of the summary hearing case against Nuezca for my approval of his immediate dismissal from the service,” said Sinas.
Incidentally, Sinas said earlier this week that there’s no need to seal the service firearms of police personnel during the holidays, unlike what the PNP consistently did in the past, because he believes they are responsible and disciplined.
“May self-restraint at disiplina na ang karamihan sa amin and proven na maski may tape ka, kung gusto mo magbaril, gagawin mo,” said Sinas, who was promoted PNP Chief just this November.
Sinas also claimed that the practice of muzzling guns made cops “hesitant” when responding to crime and thus “hampered” their response.
