(May 27, 2023) – As Super Typhoon (ST) Betty maintains its strength, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 in the eastern portions of Cagayan and Isabela.
In its latest bulletin, PAGASA listed the following 19 areas where strong winds are expected within the next 36 hours, bringing “minimal to minor threat to life and property”:
The center of the eye of ST Betty, with international name Mawar, was estimated at 1,170 kilometers (km) east of Central Luzon with maximum sustained winds near the center of 195 km per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 240 km/h. It is moving west northwestward at a speed of 30 km/h.
PAGASA noted that the eastern seaboards of Luzon and Visayas will have moderate to rough seas, measuring 1.5 meters to 3.5 meters, possibly increasing to rough to very rough level of 2.5 meters to five meters.
Luzon’s northern seaboard could also have moderate to rough seas of 1.5 meters to three meters from morning until afternoon before experiencing rough seas around 2.5 meters to four meters by evening.
“Mariners of small seacrafts are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating in these conditions,” said PAGASA.
ST Betty is expected to remain as super typhoon while maintaining its strength over the weekend. But weather forecasters are not ruling out the possibility of short-term intensification within the next 12 to 24 hours.
“However, this tropical cyclone may begin weakening considerably on Monday or Tuesday during its slowdown period over the waters east of Batanes due to potential unfavorable conditions,” added the advisory.
ST Betty is not expected to make landfall but PAGASA advised the public to stay alert. While some areas may not be directly affected by the typhoon, weather officials said monsoon rains are possible in the western side of Mimaropa, Visayas, and Mindanao.
“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” said PAGASA.
By Monday, ST Betty is expected to move northwestward and eventually decelerate while moving over the waters located on the eastern side of extreme northern Luzon. It is expected to stay almost in the same place between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, at which point it will be closest to Batanes.
PAGASA reminded disaster risk reduction and management offices to perform all efforts “to protect life and property” ahead of time.
“Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials,” said PAGASA.
