FACT CHECK | Tweets of ‘bickering’ between Andrea Brillantes and Kitty Duterte are fake

(May 12, 2022) – Some netizens are posting screenshots of the alleged argument between presidential daughter Kitty Duterte and actress Andrea Brillantes on Twitter. Several YouTube channels also created their content based on the purported exchange of tirades between the two women on social media.

These posts are fake.

CLAIM:

Brillantes allegedly tweeted that she should not be compared to Duterte because they have many differences. Duterte then purportedly affirmed the remark sarcastically.

Kapamilya Star Updates, a channel on YouTube, created a video based on the alleged word war, claiming that the 19-year-old star immediately deleted her tweet after Duterte responded to the remark. The video was titled, “Viral! Kitty Duterte, sinupalpal si Andrea Brillantes sa Twitter!”

“Sunud-sunod ang naging post ni Andrea na may patungkol sa nangyaring eleksyon kamakailan. At isa sa mga Twitter post nito ay nabanggit ng dalaga ang pangalan ni Kitty,” said the video, which only ran for a little over a minute.

FACTS:

While it is true that Brillantes became more vocal about politics, she never posted any claim mentioning the name of Duterte on Twitter. Brillantes’ account has not been verified on Twitter yet, contrary to the viral screenshots spreading online.

Duterte, for her part, is not the person maintaining the alleged account involved in the supposed spat. On her Instagram Story posted around noon on Thursday, she asked netizens to report the poser, stressing that she does not have a public Twitter account.

Different accounts and pages on Facebook have been sharing the fake screenshots, with many netizens getting fooled. Others, meanwhile, wrote a disclaimer that the accounts shown in the post were not actual accounts of Brillantes and Duterte.

Several users also pointed out that the fake screenshots were “disgusting” because the arguments raised can be construed as a form of harassment.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Brillantes has been bashed recently for being extra vocal about politics, particularly her support for Vice President Leni Robredo. She, however, remained adamant about her choice.

“Anumang ipukol sa akin, kailanman ay di ko pagsisisihan na ako’y nanindigan,” said Brillantes in a tweet on Wednesday.

Several YouTube channels have also created their own content on the alleged bickering between Brillantes and Duterte despite it being fake. Many of the videos also have a clickbait title which may mislead some people into believing that the argument really happened.

So far, the video posted by Kapamilya Star Updates has earned more than 16,000 views and 265 reactions.
