(June 20, 2024) — The Makabayan Bloc has filed House Resolution 1773 calling for an investigation into the alleged secret campaign of the United States, particularly the Pentagon, undermining China’s COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic.
House Deputy Minority leader and ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro spearheaded the move, condemning the alleged operation and its implications for public health and international relations.
According to a report by Reuters, the US military ran a clandestine campaign to discredit Chinese vaccines, including Sinovac, by creating fake social media accounts impersonating Filipinos.
Moreover, these accounts, over 300 of which were identified on X (formerly Twitter), spread anti-vaccine messages with slogans like “#ChinaAngVirus” (China is the virus).
The campaign specifically targeted the Philippines, which was grappling with high COVID-19 infection rates and a limited vaccination rollout.
Additionally, the messages propagated by these accounts included statements such as, “COVID came from China and the VACCINE also came from China, don’t trust China!” and “From China – PPE, Face Mask, Vaccine: FAKE. But the Coronavirus is real.”
This disinformation allegedly contributed to vaccine hesitancy in the Philippines.
Amidst the country already struggling with low vaccine coverage, thereby endangering lives and undermining efforts to control the pandemic. The impact of this operation is significant, with public health experts criticizing it for fostering distrust in vaccines.
The campaign reportedly continued despite objections from US diplomats in Southeast Asia, who advised against such actions during the health crisis.
More than that, an internal Pentagon review in late 2021 admitted to using poor tradecraft and insufficient oversight, yet reports suggest that similar propaganda efforts persist, with General Dynamics IT recently securing a $493 million contract for influence services.
Rep. Castro’s resolution calls for a thorough investigation by the House of Representatives to determine the extent of the damage caused by this secret campaign and to hold those responsible accountable. The resolution underscores the need to protect Philippine sovereignty and public health from foreign interference.
“The Philippines was targeted by this operation, and it is crucial to uphold transparency, truth, and ethical conduct, especially during a global health crisis,” Castro said.
The House investigation aims to assess the full impact of the campaign on the Philippines and to ensure that similar actions do not compromise the nation’s health and security in the future.
