(December 7, 2024) – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Saturday maintained that the country will employ a “whole-of-government” approach to protect fisherfolk in the West Philippine Sea amid China’s recent harassment.
PCG spokesperson Cdre. Jay Tarriela asserted that the Philippines will remain “undeterred” in defending its rights to sovereignty in the disputed territories.
“We’re still going to deploy our assets in the West Philippine Sea at patuloy nating titindigan ang ating posisyon,” said Tarriela in a media forum.
He furthered that the PCG will support Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) if they decide to deploy warships in the West Philippine Sea
“This is not a recommendation. All I’m saying is that in terms of reciprocity, that can be a policy option that can be carried out,” added Tarriela. “The commander-in-chief, the president himself, has the full authority to decide on this.”
Last Wednesday, PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua faced “shadowing” and “dangerous maneuvers” from China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) during a routine patrol and resupply mission in Scarborough Shoal, which is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
On the same day, a China Coast Guard ship water cannoned and allegedly “intentionally sideswiped” the vessels of the PCG and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Hasa Hasa Shoal.
The Philippines filed another diplomatic protest, upping this year’s total to 60 and the 193rd overall since Marcos assumed the presidency.
Marcos urged the AFP to never be provoked by China’s bullying tactics. He also vowed that the Philippines will continue to adhere to international law amid the continued tension in the West Philippine Sea, saying the country has no business “instigating a war.”
China has repeatedly intruded into the West Philippine Sea despite the landmark ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 that nullified its excessive claims in the South China Sea.
