(February 12, 2025) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos on Wednesday reminded candidates for the 2025 midterm elections to keep public service in mind even as political rivalries intensify during the campaign season.
In a speech during a general assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines in Manila, the president stressed the need for elected officials to “cool their heads” after the elections end in May so they are able to serve their electorate.
“Sa init ng kampanya, sa init ng halalan, huwag nating kakalimutan na tayo ay nandito, tayo ay pumasok sa serbisyo ng publiko upang tulungan ang taumbayan,” he said.
“Kahit na mainit na nga ang laban, maiinit, maaanghang na ang mga binibitawang salita, sa puno’t dulo nito ginagawa natin lahat ito para makatulong sa ating mga minamahal na kapwa Pilipino. Huwag natin sanang makakalimutan ‘yan.”
Marcos noted that the election campaign heats up the most at the local level, particularly in barangays where he said rivalries between candidates can at times turn “personal.”
“Mainit pa rin kahit sa municipality,” he said. “And… that is the process of democracy. Kailangan nating dumaan sa eleksyon. Kailangan natin makuha ulit ang mandato ng tao upang tayo ay magawa natin ang ating trabaho,” he said.
Senatorial and party-list candidates from various political parties and factions held massive rallies and house-to-house visits as they entered the start of the 90-day campaign period for national positions on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
For local government positions, the start of the campaign period is scheduled on March 28. This does not include barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan posts, whose elections are currently scheduled in December 2025.
