Paul Gutierrez confirms expiration of term as Executive Director of PTFoMS

(September 18, 2024) – Paul Gutierrez confirmed on Wednesday the expiration of his term effective immediately as Executive Director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS).

Following this, he expressed gratitude to Pres. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos for the opportunity to serve in the PTFoMS for over a year, starting from his appointment on May 25, 2023.

“His decision to continue with the PTFoMS is the clearest message to all that he is committed to creating a safe media environment where every member of the press can practice their profession responsibly, professionally, and without fear,” he stated.

He said that during his term, the PTFoMS helped solve all five violent attacks against the press that occurred under the Marcos administration, while also assisting in resolving two media killings from previous administrations, such as the Ed Dizon case in 2019 during the Duterte administration and the Gerry Ortega case in 2011 during the Aquino administration.

Gutierrez added that the PTFoMS promptly and diligently assisted in addressing all incidents of threats and harassment against members of the press that were brought to their attention. He noted that, despite its limited budget, the PTFoMS was able to conduct eight regional media safety summits across the country with full support from local government units (LGUs) and media organizations.

In his statement, he expressed gratitude to the PTFoMS Inter-Agency Partners, including the NBI, PNP, Philippine Army, and DOJ, for their full support in the joint effort to bring justice to victims of media killings.

He also thanked Justice Sec. Boying Remulla, PCO Secretary Cheloy Garafil, Secretary Cesar Chavez, as well as his friends, family, and the PTFoMS staff.

“I thank all the members of the press—groups and individuals all over the country—who answered my call that without their help and cooperation, the PTFoMS can only do so much. Para sa inyo ito at salamat sa tulong at suporta ninyo,” he said.
