(September 19, 2023) – The United States on Tuesday turned over a new Cessna-208B single-engine aircraft to its oldest security ally, the Philippines, boosting its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in the West Philippine Sea.
Colonel Edward Evans, chief of the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group (JUSMAG) – Philippines, turned over the aircraft to Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro in ceremonies at Clark Air Field, the former home of the US 13th Air Force.
Teodoro turned over the plane to General Romeo Brawner and the Philippine Air Force will use it for its surveillance mission to enhance maritime domain awareness in the disputed sea.
“The platform you see here is an ISR platform which will contribute, no doubt, to our Command and Control, and our ability to protect whatever mission area is critical to us,” Teodoro said in a news release.
The Cessna-208B Caravan is the third plane of its kind in PAF’s inventory, with the first two delivered and formally turned over in August 2017.
Teodoro said he expects more exchanges similar to the transfer of the C-208 aircraft with other like-minded nations in the coming days.
“Because of the fact that we have international law and order, which includes freedom of navigation and an international airspace as justification for what we are doing, we hear a chorus of nations supporting us because we are in the right,” he said.
The Philippines has been engaging with foreign allies such as the U.S. seeking to reinforce the country’s territorial claims in the contested South China Sea, including plans for joint maritime patrols with other nations.
On Monday, the Philippines accused China of causing environmental destruction in Iroquois Reef, a maritime feature located south of the gas-rich Reed Bank, which was blamed on the swarming of dozens of Chinese maritime militia vessels in the area.
