(April 20, 2022 – UPDATE) – Presidential candidate Leody de Guzman on Wednesday said they plan to file criminal charges against the individuals behind the shooting incident that injured five people during his visit to indigenous farmers in Bukidnon.
De Guzman, the standard-bearer of Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) in the 2022 elections, said they will hold the perpetrators of the violence accountable. He was safe from the assault but farmer organizer Nanie Abela, who was standing beside him during yesterday’s attack in the town of Quezon, was shot.
“Kailangan malagot ‘yung mga gumawa nito kaya magsasampa kami ng criminal case sa kanila,” said De Guzman on Ted Failon and DJ Chacha sa Radyo 5. “At the same time, ako’y nananawagan kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na labanan o ipatigil na ‘yung land-grabbing sa Mindanao dahil kawawa ‘yung mga kapatid nating katutubo.”
De Guzman said the assailants were believed to be security guards of a pineapple plantation reportedly managed by Quezon Mayor Pablo Lorenzo III. De Guzman added that the land measures about 900 hectares but at least four hectares were not utilized by the company.
Lorenzo, reportedly an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, said they denounce the use of violence in expressing one’s purported right over a property.
“We condemn the use of any violence in expressing such rights as our laws and procedural due process mandates that any conflicting claims should be resolved in a proper forum and with the courts,” said Lorenzo.
Members of the Manobo-Pulangihon tribe have sought to reclaim their ancestral land but they have been barred from doing so over the last five years. It prompted them to build shelters by the road even if it was dangerous.
“Apat na ang nasasagasaang bata (sa daan). Doon sa 1,000 hectares na lupain, merong four hectares na bakante at walang tanim ‘yung kumpanya. Gusto ng mga Manobo na roon magpunta para magtayo ng bahay nang maging ligtas sila roon sa nangyayari,” said De Guzman.
Aside from Abela, Bae Charita Anglao del Soccoro, Datu Didilusan Arroyo, Orlando Lingaolingao, and Edger Dabatian were also hit. PLM senatorial candidates Roy Cabonegro and David D’Angelo were also present during the incident.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is still “premature” to say that the attack was related to the 2022 elections but vowed to continue probing. PNP public information chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba noted that there was “no proper coordination” in the visit.
“We are still gathering enough evidence and determining the circumstances surrounding the incident,” said Alba. “Walang mapagtanungan ang responding PNP units in the area to gather vital information for the filing of appropriate charges.”
Nevertheless, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has offered to provide security to presidential and vice presidential candidates if they need such. De Guzman welcomed this possibility.
Comelec chairperson Saidamen Pangarungan also promised to look into the matter, while Comelec commissioner George Garcia described the incident as “a cowardly act that should be condemned by peace-loving Filipinos.”
The Malacañang also condemned the attack and asked local authorities to thoroughly investigate.
