(October 17, 2024) – Former president Rodrigo Duterte will attend the planned investigation of the Senate into his controversial war on drugs if necessary, Sen. Bato Dela Rosa claimed on Thursday.
Last Wednesday, Dela Rosa announced his intention to open a motu proprio investigation into the matter before the upper chamber resumes its regular session on November 4.
“Hindi pa nanggaling sa kanya officially, it’s just an assumption on my part na kapag ang Senado ang mag-imbestiga, whether or not nandiyan ako or si Sen. Bong Go, basta Senado ang mag-imbestiga, mas komportable siya mag-attend,” said Dela Rosa on One News’ Storycon.
Go already expressed his willingness to file a resolution to investigate the allegations surrounding Duterte’s brutal war on drugs.
Dela Rosa and Go are close allies of Duterte.
Dela Rosa noted that he does not need to wait for Go’s resolution since he already has a proposal that seeks to investigate claims made by former Bureau of Customs intelligence officer Jimmy Guban.
Guban alleged that Duterte’s son, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, and son-in-law, Mans Carpio, are involved in the drug trade.
Carpio is the husband of Duterte’s daughter, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Dela Rosa also responded to comments from former senator Franklin Drilon, who said it would be inappropriate for someone implicated in the issue to lead an investigation.
“Kaya nga sabi ko I was hesitant at first to conduct my investigation and my commitee dahil nga lalabas na self-serving,” said Dela Rosa. “Kung wala na talagang ibang paraan para ma-maintain ‘yung check-and-balance between the two chambers, I think puwede ko ipagpatuloy ‘yung aking investigation.”
Dela Rosa was the chief of the Philippine National Police during the height of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs.
He has been criticized for refusing to participate in the inquiry of the quad committee in the House of Representatives, dismissing it as a “demolition job” and a “fishing expedition.”
The International Criminal Court is investigating Duterte, Dela Rosa, and several police officers for possible crimes against humanity during the cruel war on drugs, which reportedly killed 30,000 individuals.
