(July 11, 2024) – The Makabayan bloc on Thursday revealed its plan to field a full slate of 12 senatorial candidates in the 2025 midterm elections, citing the need to have more progressive lawmakers.
Branding themselves as the “nation’s opposition,” the coalition the names of the senatorial bets will be announced in the coming days.
The Makabayan bloc is made up of ACT Teachers Party-list, Gabriela, Kabataan Party-list, Bayan Muna, and Anakpawis.
Last month, ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro announced her intention to run for senator in next year’s midterm elections to have an “alternative” in the race.
The progressive group expressed openness to alliances with like-minded candidates.
Colmenares ran for senator in the 2022 elections but lost.
The Makabayan bloc, which was founded in 2009, has never won a seat in the Senate. Currently, it has three representatives in the House of Representatives.
The coalition clarified that there have been no formal talks yet with other opposition groups, including the one potentially led by former senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.
The Makabayan bloc has been critical of the administration of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. and former president Rodrigo Duterte and the administration, calling out the social injustices and human rights abuses under their watch.
