(August 11, 2024) – Two lawmakers on Sunday rebuked Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio for her criticisms of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. regarding the alleged lack of funding for flood control projects in Davao City.
Zambales Rep. Jefferson Khonghun slammed Duterte-Carpio after recently leaving the country despite the strong typhoon battering her fellow Filipinos.
“Sino ba ang tinatawag ng netizens na #LakwatSARA sa gitna ng malakas na ulan noong Carina? Hindi ba height ng irresponsibility ‘yun? Ikaw ang second-highest official of the land tapos maglalakwatsa ka sa kasagsagan ng ulan at bagyo?” said Khonghun in a statement. “Tapos wala ka na nga sa bansa hanggang ngayon, panay pa ang reklamo mo.”
He also pointed out that Duterte-Carpio’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, had six years to fund flood control programs, including those in Davao City, despite the P51 billion allocation.
“Hindi ba ito nagamit sa flood control programs? Saan na nga ba napunta itong P51 billion na ito?” addeed Khonghun.
Last Friday, Duterte-Carpio once again ranted against Marcos, her running mate in the 2022 elections, hinting at his alleged inadequate administration.
“We Filipinos deserve better. So, I am using my position, resources, and platform, to be the voice for my fellow Filipinos who are left unheard,” claimed Duterte-Carpio, who has remained mum on the issues in the West Philippine Sea and human rights abuses.
La Union Rep. Francisco Paolo Ortega said the timing of Duterte-Carpio’s criticisms raises questions about her intentions.
Khonghun and Ortega are allies of Marcos.
Ortega also mentioned the flooding in Davao City last June, pointing out that both Mayor Baste Duterte and his father were absent during the crisis, as they were in Tacloban for political reasons.
“Critiquing the current administration’s efforts in flood management without acknowledging her administration’s shortcomings does not contribute constructively to the ongoing efforts to address these challenges,” said Ortega.
He also questioned Duterte-Carpio’s political actions, suggesting a pattern of “misplaced” and “inconsistent” leadership.
