(January 16, 2025) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Thursday distanced himself from his chief legal counsel Juan Ponce Enrile’s criticism of the recent peace rally of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in Manila.
INC claimed that the massive rally, which drew a crowd of 1.5 million at Quirino Grandstand, was not political despite its call to end the impeachment complaints against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.
In a statement, the Malacañang clarified that Marcos remains opposed to the impeachment bids against Duterte-Carpio.
“While his (Enrile) thoughts may carry weight and are always valued, his is one of many that the president seriously considers. Nonetheless, the president’s stand on the issue concerned remains unchanged,” said executive secretary Lucas Bersamin.
In a post on Facebook on Wednesday, Enrile raised concerns over the peace rally, warning it could set a “very detrimental” precedent if its logic was to be followed.
“Can the INC, with all its members, amend the Constitution or suspend any of its provisions? Are we prepared to discard or sacrifice the value of the rule of law for a person or a group of persons?” said Enrile.
INC, known for its bloc voting, endorsed the now-defunct UniTeam of Marcos and Duterte-Carpio in the 2022 elections.
While Marcos disagreed with Enrile’s views, Bersamin stressed that multiple opinions are always welcome within the administration.
“The president has always nurtured a culture of open ventilation of ideas within the cabinet. In this way policymaking is enriched by diverse views,” added Bersamin.
Despite their deepening rift, Marcos opposes the impeachment cases against Duterte-Carpio, saying they would be an unproductive use of legislative resources and would not serve the interests of Filipinos.
Three impeachment complaints have been filed against Duterte-Carpio for constitutional violations, betrayal of public trust, graft, corruption, and bribery due to her alleged misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, which she previously headed.
A fourth impeachment case is reportedly underway.
