Pimentel doubts three Dutertes will run for Senate in 2025 midterm elections

(June 27, 2024) – Sen. Koko Pimentel III on Thursday expressed skepticism about the possibility of three members of the Duterte family running for senator in the 2025 midterm elections.

Last Tuesday, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio announced that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, and her brothers, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, will all gun for a seat in the Senate.

“I think one of them will still prefer to be a mayor of Davao City, so may maiiwan. So, dalawa na lang ang naiwan (for Senate). Si former president, depende na ‘yun kasi sa pakiramdam niya given his age,” said Pimentel, the minority leader.

Duterte-Carpio’s father and brothers have remained mum on her announcement.

Critics blasted the pronouncement, alleging the Dutertes are making public office a business. Some said they’re making a mockery of the government.

Earlier, Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. said the Philippines is “a free country” and that the Dutertes are “allowed to do whatever they want” in the next year’s midterm elections.

He added that Duterte-Carpio’s resignation from his Cabinet does not change the UniTeam, saying the Duterte-led Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) was never part of it.

Pimentel, meanwhile, remained optimistic about the future of PDP despite conflicts with the UniTeam.

“Pagdating sa dulo, when all of them have abandoned their faction, it will be left to me to resuscitate and save the PDP-Laban,” added Pimentel. “At any rate, na-predict ko na ‘yan na iiwanan din ‘yan.”

Pimentel leads a wing of the party, while the elder Duterte leads another wing.

Last April, Pimentel lashed at PDP over its decision to drop the term “Laban” in the group’s name.

Pimentel, whose senatorial term ends next year, expressed his readiness to face the elder Duterte despite their differences.

“We haven’t talked for the longest time. Pero if I see him, of course, the respect is there,” said Pimentel.
