(June 2, 2025) – Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel on Monday said he believes the impeachment trial against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio could continue even after the 19th Congress ends, challenging the position of some of his colleagues.
His remarks come amid confusion over the scheduling of the impending impeachment proceedings.
“The trial of the current impeachment case now pending before the Senate of the 19th Congress can cross over and continue from 19th to 20th Congress. The impeachment docket of the Senate Impeachment Court to continue and remain to be the same,” said Senator Pimentel.
Last May 23, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero sent a letter to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, inviting the House prosecution panel to the Senate on June 2 to present the articles of impeachment. He initially said the Senate would convene as an impeachment court on June 3.
However, Senate President Escudero later informed the House — through a second letter sent last Thursday — that the reading of the articles would be rescheduled. No new date has been set.
Senator Pimentel argued there is no provision in the 1987 Constitution or the Senate’s own impeachment rules that bars the continuation of an impeachment trial from one Congress to the next.
He also raised questions about Senator Escudero’s decision to release an impeachment calendar during the congressional break.
“Can I request some information about the impeachment calendar? First impeachment calendar issued when we were on break. May we know when His Honor issued the first impeachment calendar, June 2 for receiving House prosecution? May we know the basis of the authority of the SP, when he issued impeachment calendar?”
Senator Escudero previously said it would ultimately be up to the 20th Congress to decide the fate of the impeachment trial.
However, some legal experts have pointed out that this may raise constitutional questions — particularly whether senators elected under a new Congress can act on articles of impeachment transmitted by the House of the previous one.
