(December 1, 2024) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday continued to deploy personnel at EDSA Shrine to ensure its security despite the decreasing number of supporters of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.
They have been trooping to EDSA Shrine to call for the ouster of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. after Duterte-Carpio’s recent online rant. Their number, however, shrunk from hundreds to only around 20 today. They were also only allowed to gather in front of a nearby mall since the church’s operations were affected.
“Nagdarasal at nagmimisa kami sa loob ng shrine, sila naman ay sumisigaw doon sa labas,” said Rev. Fr. Jerome Secillano, the rector of EDSA Shrine.
The PNP also received video footage of some protesters allegedly being paid and given food in exchange for their appearance.
“’Yung iba sa kanila ay nagrereklamo dahil allegedly, ang pangako sa kanila ay bibigyan sila ng P500 for three days pero ang binigay lang ay P200,” said PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo on Wednesday.
The rally was slammed by netizens, calling out the failure of the supposed movement.
Many earlier pointed out the irony that the supporters of Duterte-Carpio’s family, who lambasted progressive groups for protesting during the heavy-handed term of his father, are now the ones protesting.
The PNP filed several charges against Duterte-Carpio after meddling with the transfer of Office of the Vice President (OVP) chief of staff Zuleika Lopez to a military hospital amid her detention.

Duterte-Carpio is being investigated for her alleged misuse of confidential funds worth over P610 million combined of the OVP and the Department of Education, which she previously headed.

The National Bureau of Investigation also ordered Duterte-Carpio to explain her grave threats against Marcos, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
