(February 20, 2025) – A lawmaker on Thursday claimed that allies of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio are weaponizing the Office of the Ombudsman to retaliate against lawmakers who voted to impeach her.
Zamboanga City Rep. Mannix Dalipe called the move a part of “desperate political maneuvers” by Duterte-Carpio’s camp.
“We trust that the Ombudsman will not allow itself to be used as a tool for political games and will dismiss this baseless request for preventive suspension,” said Dalipe in a statement.
Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez asked the Office of the Ombudsman to preventively suspend Dalipe, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Marikina Rep. Stella Quimbo, and Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co over alleged “pork barrel insertions” worth P241 billion in the 2025 national budget.
Dalipe added that the complaint was merely a distraction from the looming impeachment trial of Duterte-Carpio in the Senate. She is facing allegations of constitutional violations after 215 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to impeach her on February 5.
“Malinaw ang taktika nila: Mag-file ng mga kaso para may balitang pantakip sa mga isyung hinaharap ng mga Duterte. Kahit walang kuwentang kaso, isasampa sa korte para ilihis ang isyu,” said Dalipe, the majority leader.
Romualdez and his allies are rumored to be behind the impeachment push against Duterte-Carpio. Romualdez is a cousin of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr., whom Duterte-Carpio has been at odds with since last year.
This year’s national budget is also being criticized for having blank items in the bicameral report.
Quimbo, the acting chairperson of the committee on appropriations, admitted that there were blank items but insisted that funding sources had already been identified before the bicameral report was approved.
Meanwhile, Romualdez’s pet project, the Ayuda sa Kapos Ang Kita Program received P26 billion under the national expenditure plan, which also raised concerns.
