BILANG PILIPINO | Duterte drop hints one presidential aspirant uses cocaine

(November 18, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday attacked a presidential aspirant, claiming the candidate has been taking illegal substances, an opening salvo for the noisy and raucous elections in the country.

At a meeting with the anti-insurgency task force in Mimaropa, the firebrand leader dropped hints that the presidential aspirant, who comes from a wealthy family, has been using cocaine, warning the country’s drug problem could worsen if he is elected as president next year.

“May kandidato tayo na nagco-cocaine yan, yang mga anak ng mayaman, kaya nga nagtaka ako, anong nagawa ng tao na yan?” Duterte said in a public address.

“I’m just asking, anong, what contribution has he made pala sa Pilipinas? Yan ang gusto ko lang tanungin nang ano, hindi naman sa… Bakit ang Pilipino parang lokong-loko na suporta? Magtanong lang ako sa inyo, ano ang ginawa niyan?”

Duterte won in 2016 on a platform of fighting corruption, criminality and illegal drugs. His centerpiece program, war on drugs, has killed more than 6,000 poor, street-level drug peddlers, couriers and users.

Duterte said the presidential candidate is a “weak leader” with no known achievements and is banking on his late father’s popularity.

“He is a very weak leader, ang character niya, except for the name… pero ang tatay,”Duterte said. “Pero siya, anong ginawa niya? You might win hands down, ok, if that is what the Filipino wants, go ahead.”

Duterte did not identify the presidential aspirant, but political observers speculated he was taking a swipe at the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Ferdinand Jr. has teamed up with Duterte’s daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio even though they come from different parties.

Duterte did not hide his opposition to Marcos’ candidacy after his daughter dropped her presidential ambitions to run for vice president. He also endorsed his long-time personal assistant, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go as his successor.

He has also called Marcos a “communist.”
