(August 5, 2021) – Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday blamed misinformation peddlers for the overcrowding in several COVID-19 vaccination sites in Metro Manila, rejecting claims that the government’s messaging also served as a factor in creating the risky situation.
Roque wondered why the people who spread disinformation don’t contract COVID-19. He also dissuaded the public from believing malicious information that only sows further confusion amid the health crisis.
“Tingin ko may nagpapakalat talaga ng fake news. Meron talagang walang matinong ginagawa sa buhay nila. Ewan ko ba kung bakit ‘di pa sila ma-COVID,” said Roque in his press briefing.

Thousands trooped to inoculation sites in Metro Manila, including Manila and Las Piñas, to avail of the COVID-19 doses as walk-in registrants. Only senior citizens and people with comorbidities will be allowed as walk-ins during the two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila.
“Patuloy ang serbisyo ng lahat ng government communication entities dahil importante po sa panahon ng pandemya at lockdown na malaman niyo ang katotohanan,” said Roque.
Rumors swirled that people will be barred from going outside or getting cash aid unless they are vaccinated, claims which the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) denied. Others also feared they might be disallowed to report to work if not immunized.
“The ayuda 2 approved by the president is for low-income individuals and families in the National Capital Region (NCR) regardless of vaccination status,” said DILG spokesperson Jonathan Malaya in a statement, adding the COVID-19 vaccination drive will continue during the ECQ for those with a scheduled appointment.

Critics pointed to President Rodrigo Duterte’s previous pronouncements as a possible cause of the confusion since he repeatedly raised the possibility of ordering the arrest of those who refuse to get vaccinated.
In a recent address, Duterte said the unvaccinated population should refrain from going out to protect the population from the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.
“Those who do not want it (vaccines), well, for all I care you can die anytime, sa totoo lang. Ganun ang istorya niyan, patigasan tayo eh,” said Duterte last July 28.
Despite this, Roque believes the government has no responsibility in the raucous situation, calling on local chief executives to ensure that health protocols are still duly followed.
He also encouraged the public to pre-register before coming to vaccination sites for a smoother process.
“Nananawagan kami, kailangang ipatupad ang minimum (public) health standards, otherwise ang ating bakunahan na ang objective ay makasalba ng buhay, baka ‘yan pa ang maging dahilan na pagkakasakit at pagkamatay,” said Roque.
