(September 9, 2021) – There is a strong possibility the mayor of the capital city and the daughter of the late movie icon will team up to seek the country’s two highest political offices in next year’s elections, insiders in the two politicians camp said on Thursday,
Both Manila Mayor Francisco Domagoso and Senator Grace Poe have yet to announce plans to run for president and vice president but there are ongoing talks for them to get together, insiders said.
“They are the team to beat,” said a political operator privy to negotiations between the two camps. “I was told Senator Poe has agreed to run as vice president to Isko Moreno. The partnership will soon be announced before the filing of candidacies next month.”
Domagoso is also known as Isko Moreno, his screen name when he was a television and movie personality. Poe is the daughter of the late film action hero Fernando Poe Jr., the acknowledged king of Philippine movies.
A political strategist, who is part of the group brokering the merger, said nothing is final but both sides recognized that they have a bigger chance of winning next year. “It’s almost there,” he added.
Both Domagoso and Poe are top contenders in pre-election surveys, behind Davao City Sara “Inday” Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte. Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr is also among top presidential candidates.
There were rumors Inday Sara and Bongbong Marcos will team up for next year’s polls. Marcos is expected to make an announcement on Saturday, the 104th birthday of his father, the 10th president of the Republic.
The two-term Davao City mayor had announced she is not seeking the presidency after her father accepted the nomination of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) as vice president candidate.
But the people behind Domagoso and Poe are taking Sara’s announcement with a grain of salt. They believed the Davao mayor will run for president because she has been preparing for it, moving around and building alliances.
Marcos, on the other hand, has said he will run for a national office but has not made up his mind. His elder sister, Senator Imee Marcos, has said he will be running for vice president again.
In 2016, he lost narrowly to Leonor Robredo, contesting the vice presidential elections at the Presidential Election Tribunal. The Supreme Court, sitting as an election tribunal, had ruled against his protest, upholding Robredo’s poll victory.
On Wednesday, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III announced plans to seek the presidency and vice presidency, promising to end corruption and a stronger pandemic response, taking a swipe at the administration.
The administration also proclaimed Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and the president as its team for next year’s elections. However, Go has declined the nomination putting into doubt the viability of the PDP-Laban ticket.
The Domagoso-Poe team could be the third team to enter the presidential derby. Boxing icon and Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquaio and Robredo could also announce their candidacies in the next few weeks.
