(December 13, 2022) – A Youtube video claimed that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. could withdraw US$987 billion kept in a bank in Brussels, Belgium when he went to Europe this week for the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit.
This claim has no basis.
CLAIM:
On December 10, Youtube channel “PweDelie TV” posted a video titled: “GRABE HETO NA! $987 BILLION MARCOS ACCOUNT SA BELGIUM NEXT TARGET NI PANGULONG BONGBONG MARCOS?”
The video’s description continues: “NEXT TRIP NI PANGULONG BONGBONG MARCOS AY SA BANSANG BELGIUM, KUKUNIN NA KAYA NYA ANG ACCOUNT NILA SA BANK OF BRUSSELS NA NAGKAKAHALAGA NG 987 BILLION DOLLARS?”
The video was also posted on Facebook with the same caption.
RATING: NO BASIS
FACTS:
The video starts with a 48-second clip from a 2009 documentary where former first lady Imelda Marcos showed BBC journalist Simon Reeve a treasury certificate allegedly showing deposits for US$987 billion in a bank in Brussels under the name of the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
The hour-long episode can no longer be accessed on the BBC website but was reuploaded in four parts to Youtube on April 8, 2011.
This is not the first time clips of Imelda Marcos from this documentary have circulated online.
Earlier this year, Vera Files fact checked a video that Marcos Sr. is the wealthiest man in the world. “No evidence to prove or disprove the claim” made by Imelda in the 2009 documentary was found.
The rest of the video is a press briefing from Department of Foreign Affairs – Office of ASEAN Affairs Assistant Secretary Daniel Espiritu last December 9 on Marcos Jr.’s trip to Belgium to attend the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit.
Clips from various official events such as the ASEAN summit and cabinet meetings were used over audio from the briefing.
The video provides no evidence to back up the claim made in the title and description.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Since it was uploaded, the video has already gained 228,281 views, 4,315 likes, and 705 comments. The PweDelie TV channel has 362,000 subscribers and 46,941,217 total views since being created on April 11, 2015.
